Lu Weijin, an accountant in Zhongshan City in south China's Guangdong Province, was sentenced to death after being convicted of embezzling 17 million yuan (US$ 2.12 million) in bank deposits.
Lu, 31, was caught in 2005 in Jingzhou City, central China's Hubei Province, after being at large for more than two years.
The Zhongshan Intermediate People's Court, which heard the case, found that Lu, former director of the accounting department at a branch of a local bank, felt unsatisfied with his mediocre salary.
Lu took advantage of his post and professional skills to fabricate certificates and list false items, stealing money from accounts in the bank.
