China executed its first HIV-positive criminal, Ai Haiti, a 29-year-old drug addict arrested in 2003 with 382 grams of heroin. Ai was executed by lethal injection in Xichang town in southwestern China. He had been convicted on drug trafficking charges in 2000 by a court in southern China, but released on bail the following year. An addict since 1993, Ai contracted HIV/AIDS though his drug use. His execution came two days before the opening of a major HIV/AIDS conference in Bangkok.
