it was reported that Li Youcan, former deputy-director of the Hebei provincial foreign trade and economic cooperation department had been sentenced to death in China for having accepted bribes totaling 47.44m yuan. He was currently being detained in Hebei province waiting to be executed. It was alleged that from August 2001 to April 2003, Li accepted on average more than 2.8m yuan worth of bribes each month. He had fled to Russia in 2003 in order to evade bribery charges but was handed over to China in April 2004.
