CHINA. GANSU COURT SENTENCES FORMER DEVELOPMENT COMPANY OFFICIAL TO DEATH

in its second trial, the Gansu Provincial Higher People's Court sentenced to death Xu Guangming, former manager of Lianhai Comprehensive Development Co. Xu had been convicted of illegally obtaining 5.65m yuan, accepting 1.2m yuan in bribes and offering 29,672 yuan in bribes. The Lanzhou City Intermediate People’s Court had originally sentenced Xu to death for bribery on 16 May 2000 and the Gansu Provincial Higher People's Court had upheld the verdict. On 11 December 2001, the Supreme People's Court revoked the jurisdictions of the initial and second trials and ordered Lanzhou City Intermediate People's Court to retry the case. Xu was again sentenced to death on 27 April 2004.
