China is much freer than before, but its sheer size makes it the world's No. 1 quantitative violator of human rights, the New York Times said.
In the editorial entitled "A Global Catalog of Wrongs," the New York Times said Beijing executed more than 3,000 people in 2002, many without due process of law. Citing a U.S. State Department report on the human rights practices and problems of almost every country in the world, the newspaper said China uses torture, forced confessions, imprisonment in psychiatric hospitals and lengthy detentions with no right to communicate with family members or lawyers.
