Canada received assurances from Beijing that Huseyin Celil, 37, a Canadian jailed on terrorism charges in China, would not be executed, a spokesman for Foreign Minister Peter MacKay said.
"Minister MacKay spoke to Minister Li, and the Chinese official said they would respect the undertaking they had with the Uzbeks concerning Mr. Celil, saying again that he would not be executed," Lemay said.
China had reportedly sentenced Celil to death for founding a political party to represent a minority ethnic group in Xinjiang province.
Celil fled China a decade ago, arrived in Canada in 2001 as a refugee and became a Canadian citizen.
He was arrested in Uzbekistan in March while trying to renew a visitor's visa and was extradited to China where he vanished in Chinese custody, said Canadian officials.
