Chinese and Taiwanese residents in Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal took to the streets to protest against the murder of local Taiwanese businessman Shin-Chih Liao, who was shot dead at a factory in Field Street. About 400 people gathered outside Newcastle Town Hall to protest what they said had become an unacceptable situation in Newcastle and surrounding towns. At the protest, Liao's family carried a picture of him and several other people carried placards with slogans that read "Bring back the death penalty", "We need protection" and "Respect all human life." The protesters called for the re-introduction of the death penalty for murderers and threatened to disinvest their estimated R2 billion presence in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
