Crowds gathered outside the Magistrate's Court in the South African town of Newcastle called for the death penalty for four people arrested in connection with the murder of a pastor.
KwaZulu-Natal police superintendent Buhle Ngidi said Nhlanhla Msidi, 41, and three brothers - aged 17, 18, and 23 - face charges of murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping. The four were not asked to plead when they appeared in court.
Most of the 600 protesters who chanted slogans calling for the four to be publicly hanged dispersed peacefully. Around 150 of the protesters marched to the Osizweni police station where they were addressed by community leaders.
The bodies of Pastor Maskozana Grace Khumalo, 54, and her three foster children were found near the Watervaal prison in Osizweni on September 6. They had been stabbed.
Ngidi said the funeral for the four was expected to be held on Sunday
