Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott welcomed the conviction of first Bali bombing suspect Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, and said that, despite its opposition to the death penalty, the British Government would not to try to stop the Indonesian authorities from carrying out the execution. "It is not for us to tell other countries what to do, but our position is clear on the death penalty," Prescott said. "We have to be pleased that someone has been convicted for committing this horrendous act." Amrozi's was the first of at least three dozen cases to come to trial. Three other defendants were facing the court in Denpasar, Bali's capital, for the terrorist attack which killed 202 people, 26 of whom were Britons.
