Dullah Omar, architect of the amnesty process came face to face with Ferdi Barnard, the apartheid assassin who tried to gun him down in 1989. The two men met for the first time at the Cape Town hearing of Barnard's Truth and Reconciliation Commission amnesty application for trying to kill Omar. Barnard told Omar he was grateful for the abolition of the death penalty, one of Omar's achievements as Justice Minister.
