eight people on death row challenged the sentence imposed for killing businessman Lawrence Githinji Mangondu seven years ago. Elizabeth Gitiri Gachanja, wife of former Commissioner of Lands Wilson Gachanja and seven others appeared before the Appellate Court, four years after they were convicted. They said they would challenge the manner in which their trial was conducted in the High Court. Suspended judge Mr Justice Mbogholi Msagha convicted them to death on March 13, 2003, after ruling there was overwhelming evidence implicating the eight. But the judge acquitted Mr Gachanja, who had also been charged with murdering Mr Mangondu, whose mutilated body was discovered on February 4, 2000, in Kitengela.
