KENYA. MUGGERS ELIGIBLE FOR DEATH PENALTY

it was reported that muggers in Kenya would be charged with robbery with violence, a crime that carried a mandatory death sentence.
This was part of an ambitious program the police had launched to convince city residents, particularly business people, to adopt community policing. Police said it was the only way that mugging, popularly known as ‘ngeta’, could be contained.
"It is robbery whichever way you may view it and even those who snatch bags and mobiles will face the charge. We have cases where people have been killed," Nairobi Central police boss Julius Ndegwa says. A recent study revealed that mugging remained the most common crime in urban areas, with 54 per cent of those interviewed saying they had been attacked.
