European Commission President Romano Prodi said that the case of the five Bulgarian nurses and one Palestinian doctor facing the death sentence in Libya "has to be resolved as soon as possible".
This case must be solved as soon as possible and we are making all the political and humanitarian effort to that end", he told journalists after meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg.
"The normalisation of the relations (of the EU) with Libya will help deeply, will help substantially the possibility to find a solution", he announced. Five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor had been condemned to death in May 2004 by a Libyan tribunal which found that it had infected hundreds of children with the HIV virus.
