Field commanders of the Palestinian intifada declared open season on suspected traitors in their ranks.
"Killing spies is the only way to stop others from going down the same path," said Wael, a Fatah militiaman from Balata camp, outside Nablus.
"This is the only way, but we will do it in a fair way. Our group will investigate them, and after the spies confess, we will kill them."
But some Palestinians are afraid there will be a witch-hunt against collaborators. They warned that opening the gates to mob justice could be catastrophic, and could rip apart the social fabric of Palestinian life, already badly strained by Israel's siege and rising poverty.
"We have to abandon this idea that spies are our main problem; the main problem is the occupation,' said Jamal Tirawi, who commands Fatah militia in the Balata refugee camp.
The Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group believes that more than 150 men held in jails under Palestine Authority President's Yasser Arafat's control could be condemned to death as informers.
