Fiji is looking for a foreign judge to preside over the treason trial of coup leader George Speight just three weeks before the trial commences, Chief Justice Timoci Tuivaga said.
In the interim, Sir Timoci said he would take over as trial judge after temporary judge Justice Peter Surman resigned from the case. Local media reported that Justice Surman is leaving Fiji after receiving death threats.
"We are trying to find an expatriate (judge)," Sir Timoci told the Fiji Times, after local judges all told him they were unwilling to hear the case.
Speight, whose armed rebellion in May 2000 overthrew the Labour government and plunged the country into turmoil, and his co-accused have been held since July 2000 on a prison island in Suva harbour. He faces the death penalty if convicted.
