Fiji's Conservative Alliance party says it did not put pressure on the government to remove the death penalty ahead of George Speight's forthcoming treason trial. A bill to amend the penal code is to go before the current sitting of parliament.
Rev Akuila Yabaki from the Citizens' Constitutional Forum said the amendment appears to be aimed at satisfying Speight's supporters, who include the government's junior partner, the Conservative Alliance Matanitu Vanua party. But a spokesman for the party, Col Metuisela Mua, denies that this is the case.
