Five men were sentenced to death, four in absentia, by a District court in Dhaka, Bangladesh, after they were found guilty of murdering a father and his son at Keraniganj. Shafiqul Islam was handed down the death sentence in court while Masud, Nazrul Islam alias Naju, Mister alias Choto Mister and Arif remained fugitive. They were also fined Tk 40,000 each. According to the prosecution, the convicts hacked to death grocery shop owner Sharif Hosdsain, 40, at Malopara Barishoor bazar, after he asked for payment of a cigarette they had taken from the shop on July 13, 1993. His 9-year old son Khokan, who saw his father murdered, was also killed.
