Five overseas Filipino workers awaiting execution in Saudi Arabian jails have appealed to their government and countrymen to change their fate by raising the "blood money" to exchange for their freedom.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines launched "Tulong Mo, Buhay Ko," a fund-raising drive for jailed OFW Primo Gasmen, who is set to be beheaded in January.
"Please help us because we're too poor to bring him home for Christmas," pleaded Gasmen's brother Amado at a press conference.
The family of Gasmen's victim, a Nepalese co-worker at the Al-Rajhi Co. in Riyadh, has agreed to issue an affidavit of forgiveness and desistance in exchange for $15,000 or P780,000.
Four other jailed OFWs-Miguel Fernandez Jr., George Aldana, Antonio Alveza and Wilfredo Bautista-have appealed to Malacanang and the Department of Foreign Affairs to intervene in their case.
The four said they were severely tortured in prison and forced to sign papers in Arabic that turned out to be a confession to the murder of a fellow OFW, Jaime de la Cruz.
