The second suspect in the kidnapping and frustrated murder of De La Salle student Agnes Guirindola was ordered to die by lethal injection -seven and a half years after the first suspect was sentenced to death.
"I am relieved," Guirindola, now a businesswoman, said. She burst into tears after Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Demetrio Macapagal Sr. sentenced Venancio Roxas to death for kidnapping and serious illegal detention with frustrated murder charges.
The death sentence came on top of a prison term of at least 18 years for car theft and another prison term of at least two years for theft.
Justice Secretary Hernando Perez, who sat beside Guirindola during the promulgation, said Macapagal's decision was "a great victory for justice." Roxas' cohort, Roberto Gungon, was sentenced to death by another Quezon City judge in February 1995.
He is now detained at the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
Guirindola, who was kidnapped, shot in the face and left for dead in a grassy lot in Batangas in January 1994, said she had expected a conviction but added that it was still a relief to finally get justice after more than eight years of legal battles.
"This only proves that we can still count on government and the criminal justice system to do justice to victims of heinous crimes," she said.
Perez commended Guirindola "for pursuing the case and seeing to it that justice is done."
"Let this serve as a notice to kidnappers," the secretary added.
Roxas was also ordered to pay Guirindola P1.5 million in moral and exemplary damages and over P300,000 in actual damages.
