Five rookie policemen were charged with murder for the summary execution of a man they had mistaken for a drug pusher.
Charged were Noel Favia, Henry Garcia, Mike Prado, Mon Velasco and Noe Gapal, all members of the Drug Enforcement Unit of Central Police District Station 11 in Galas, Quezon City.
They were charged before the QC Prosecutor's Office for killing Cresencio Gonzales, of Kaliraya Street, Hunters, Quezon City.
The four policemen, in civilian attire, went to a slum area on Cuenco Street in Banawe, Quezon City at about 1 a.m. on Oct. 8 and barged into the rented room of Herminia Zapanta.
Zapanta told investigators that the lawmen were looking for a suspected drug dealer named Richard. She said she hid under her bed while the men took her companion, Anabelle Baretto.
Zapanta said the men, whom she later identified as Garcia, Favia, Prado and Velasco, dragged Baretto and forced her into a white Nissan Vanette with no license plates.
Another witness, Rebecca Morga, said she was only a meter away when the policemen shot Gonzales in front of her rented room in the slum. Witness Erminia Ivasco corroborated Morga's testimony, claiming she was also standing in front of her rented room when the four policemen arrived. She said she saw the four policemen carry Gonzales's body, wrapped in a red blanket, to the vehicle.
The victim's wife, Fe Gonzales, reported the disappearance of her husband to the Department of Interior and Local Government later that day. But Gonzales' body was not found until 11 a.m. of Oct. 9, in a grassy lot on Mindanao Avenue. It bore burns while some of its vital organs were missing.
Police said Baretto, one of the witnesses, has gone missing.
