Five young men were sentenced to death for raping and stabbing to death a young woman in Bangladesh.
Special court judge Shamsunnahar Begum condemned Alamgir Khan, Alamgir Karikar, Alamgir Mondal, Kalam Mondol and Rafiq Mondal to death. All five were from the same village, Dangi of Char Bhadrasan upazila, as their victim Rabeya Begum (25).
The five enticed Begum, the mother of a son who had been abandoned by her husband, to a secluded place on the night of August 5, 1999 and gang-raped her.
When she threatened to report them to the police, they inflicted multiple injuries on her body with knife, and, thinking her dead, threw her into a marshy field behind the cinema hall at Char Bhadrasan.
In the morning she was rescued by local people and rushed to the health complex in a critical condition. She died in hospital 15 days later, having named the culprits to the police.
Her father Abul Kashem Fakir filed the case under the Women and Child Repression Act.
