Former death row inmates, human rights activists and legislators joined thousands of marchers in silence to protest against capital punishment.
The march was the closing event at the first world congress against the death penalty, held in Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament.
Marchers included Kerry Max Cook, who spent 22 years on death row in Texas before being proved innocent.
Human rights activist Bianca Jagger said the "march will send a message to the United States that if it wants to belong to the club of democratic nations it must abolish the death penalty".
