France demanded that the US spare the life of one of its citizens indicted on charges which could lead to his execution in connection with the September 11 terrorist attacks.
French Justice Minister Marylise Lebranchu said Paris could not accept the death penalty for Zacarias Moussaoui and would assist in his defence.
Attorney-General John Ashcroft would not say whether prosecutors would seek the death penalty for Moussaoui. He said objections would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
