France re-affirmed that it wanted to see a fair trial for 13 Jews, who could face the death penalty in Iran for spying. Foreign Ministry spokesman Francois Rivasseau said, "We have repeatedly told the Iranian authorities we are preoccupied and worried about this case". The Jews were due to stand trial in the southern city of Shiraz on April 13. They were arrested there in 1999 with 8 Moslems on charges of spying for Israel.
