Human rights campaigners in France denounced Governor George W. Bush as a serial killer unfit to be the next US president. "The risk of executing an innocent person is real. Our country is firmly opposed to capital punishment, committed to its abolition and will continue to do its best to achieve that," Foreign Ministry spokesman Francois Rivasseau said.
Colette Berthes, whose support group hired lawyers to defend Barnes, was "disgusted and very angry" at the execution. Danielle Mitterrand, the widow of former president Francois Mitterrand said the execution raised doubts about democracy in the United States, "which presents itself as a champion of human rights".
