Gang rape victim Anjana Mishra stated in the Hindustan Times that rapists should not be sentenced to death

Gang rape victim Anjana Mishra stated in the Hindustan Times that rapists should not be sentenced to death. "It is not the solution. The proposal to impose death penalty on rapists is more of a publicity stunt. Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani's announcement in this regard is directed at creating sensation," Mishra said. According to Mishra, it is not the stringency of laws but the surety of punishment that need to be ensured. "Rape accused, following the amendment to criminal laws in 1983, face between seven years to life imprisonment. The conviction rate, however, remains very low. What is the use of having a death sentence provision when majority of the rapists go scot-free?"
