George Rivas, 31, has been sentenced to die by lethal injection for the killing of police Officer Aubrey Hawkins by a Dallas County jury. Rivas, who led the escape of seven inmates from a South Texas prison in December, asked for the death penalty: "I don't want to just exist anymore like an animal in prison." When Rivas escaped, he was serving 17 life sentences for 2 robberies, along with another life sentence for violating probation for a home burglary. 6 of the escapees were caught in January in Colorado. The 7th committed suicide rather than surrender.
