Hands Off Cain demonstrated in front of the UN Rome headquarters to urge the Italian government to present a censure resolution of human rights violations in Iran at the current UN General Assembly in New York.
The protest also called for the reactivation of the UN monitoring in the country.
It has executed 250 people since the beginning of this year according to state-run media. Three women have been subjected to 180 lashes of the whip each, and four have been condemned to death by stoning, bringing the total of women thus condemned to 23 in the five years of government headed by President Khatami.
A man has been condemned to die by being thrown off a cliff in a sack, and a young woman called Azman will be blinded in public.
In a country that executes nearly as many people as China in proportion to its population, executions, amputations, whippings and other cruel and degrading punishments have escalated after the UNHCR failed to approve a resolution condemning human rights violations, Hands Off Cain said. The mandate for a Special Rapporteur on Iran thus failed to be renewed for the first time since the installation of the ruling Islamic regime, subtracting it from international monitoring.
In defence of the basic human rights of Iranians, HOC urged the UN to renew monitoring in Iran.
