“States sponsoring a moratorium at the UN General Assembly which will be held in September are in the majority.
There is the risk, however, that the presentation of the moratorium resolution will not take place in virtue of the principles of the tout court abolitionists,” he added.
The presentation also saw the participation of Alina Fernandez, Fidel Castro’s dissident daughter. “The European political stance of trying to create dialogue with the Cuban regime is unacceptable. We have seen that with Castro neither sanctions nor dialogue are effective. What is needed is international condemnation of the regime.
“April this year saw the execution by firing squad of three people who had tried to escape from the island. For every Cuban that makes it to Miami, three die. Forcing them to escape like that, in those conditions, is already a death sentence,” Alina said.
Blanca Gonzales, mother of Normando Hernandez, a Cuban journalist sentenced to 25 years imprisonment, said that her son’s crime was that “he was an independent journalist”. Nicole Sadighi, representative of the Student Movement Coordination Committeee for Democracy in Iran,, denounced the thousands of arrests which took place in the country against those fighting for freedom of speech.
