"The prison department in Jharkhand has a strange problem: The state's jail has 12 men who have been sentenced to death, but no hangman to execute these sentences," the Hindustan Times reported. "The Hazaribag jail, which, according to Inspector General of Prisons Satendra Kumar Singh, is the only prison with execution facilities in Jharkhand, had its last such hanging in 1964...According to jail officials, Ranchi jail had faced a similar situation in 1995 when a prisoner had to be taken to Bhagalpur for his execution... In 1964, a prisoner serving a life sentence turned hangman when they couldn't find anyone to do the job, jail officials said 'But, in 1995, we tried hard to convince some of the jail inmates to execute some death sentences, but failed,' said a senior official in the department."
