Head of the Fatwa Committee of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), KH Ma'ruf Amin, affirmed the council's support for the upholding of the death sentences handed down to drug traffickers. "The (death) sentence is (aimed at) preventing a bigger danger," Ma'ruf said, adding that allowing such harsh punishment to be carried out aims to deter others from committing the crime and teaches people a lesson. "If a sentence does not meet these two (criteria), it will not be effective," he said.
