In Indonesia, seven people were formally charged with mass killings in East Timor in the weeks following the province's independence referendum in 1999.
Three senior officials and four lesser-ranking personnel have been indicted for crimes against humanity. Scores of East Timorese refugees and priests were killed in a church complex in the town in the East Timor town of Suai in September 1999.
The three senior officials named are former East Timor governor Abilio Soares, police chief Brigadier-General Timbul Silaen and Colonel Herman Sedyono, a former district head.If found guilty they could face the death penalty.
