Hong Kong residents Tan Hung-chien and Tan Hao-hui were condemned to death by the Guangdong Supreme People's Court. They had been arrested in October 1999 in possession of 89,870 grams of cocaine.
The Shaoguan Intermediate People's Court sentenced three criminals to death for drug trafficking at their first trial. Another two criminals involved in the same case were sentenced to death with a reprieve and 10 years in jail respectively. This was the biggest drug trafficking case handled in Shaoguan in years.
