HRH Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General, paid SR4 million to save the neck of Ahmed Yahia Muhammad Al-Mutami who spent seven years in Hafr Al-Batin prison awaiting execution for premeditated murder.
Al-Mutami, who was a soldier, was on an official assignment in Hafr Al-Batin in 1994 when some people entered a prohibited area. The sergeant in charge ordered the soldiers to fire in the air just to intimidate the people so that they might leave the place.
The soldiers fired in the air and the people left the place, and Al-Mutami and his colleagues went to persuade another group of people who also had entered the restricted area. When they came back they were told that somebody was shot in the vicinity and was dying. They went and saw the lifeless body in a pool of blood.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Al-Mutami was responsible for the murder. He was taken to the law court and sentenced to death. Later on it was discovered that the bullet which struck the man and killed him came from the opposite direction. But it was too late for Al-Mutami as he was sentenced and the case was closed.
Prince Sultan followed up the case, and the family of the deceased was persuaded to accept the blood money which was fixed at SR4 million, paid by the Prince.
