Hundreds of Bangladeshi women took to the streets in Dhaka in a silent protest against spiralling numbers of sexual attacks, calling for rapists to be punished by death.
The women, gagging themselves with black scarves, said rapists often slip through Bangladesh's lax legal system unpunished.
"Rapists deserve no mercy, give them capital punishment," read some of the placards carried by protesters.
Bangladesh has a law stipulating up to life imprisonment for crimes against women - including rape and murder - but it is hardly used, lawyers say.
"Very few cases (of rape) come to court for trial and the accused mostly go away unpunished for lack of witnesses and foul play by investigators," one lawyer said.
The protest was organised by women's group Sommilita Nari Samaj or "combined women community" as part of a countrywide campaign against sexual violence.
A survey by the non-governmental Institute of Democratic Rights said that in February alone some 56 women, including 29 minors, were raped - many by more than one attacker.
