Hundreds of cars jammed the border crossing between Lebanon and Israel
1 MIN READ
Hundreds of cars jammed the border crossing between Lebanon and Israel. Most were members of the Israeli-sponsored South Lebanon Army who were headed south into Israel in fear for their lives. Regarded in Lebanon as traitors because they collaborated with Israel, more than 5,000 SLA militiamen and their families fled their homes as Lebanese Shiite Muslim guerrillas advanced into Israel's crumbling southern Lebanon occupation zone. Hundreds more waited at the Fatima Gate crossing point, near the northern Israeli town of Metulla, for permission to enter Israel, and Israeli officials said they expect thousands more in coming days. Armed, trained, paid and equipped by Israel, the militiamen face prison terms, and in some cases death sentences, if they are caught in Lebanon.
