Hungary's ousted Prime Minister Viktor Orban, shaken by the country's bloodiest bank robbery, said he favoured bringing back the death penalty.
Orban, aware the European Union would bar Hungary from joining if capital punishment was reinstated, said he changed his mind while attending a memorial service for eight people shot dead in cold blood during a robbery two weeks ago.
"It was not the Lord Almighty who decided to do away with capital punishment, it was legal texts written in constitutions by human hands and...if people start to think differently, those texts can be rewritten," Orban told a news conference to mark his conservative government's last days in office.
A new centre-left government will be sworn in after winning a close April election.
