Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, the youngest son of former president Soeharto, will face the death sentence if he is proven guilty of the charges against him, namely premeditated murder and illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
The youngest son of former president Soeharto became a fugitive after refusing to serve his 18-month jail sentence passed on him by a Supreme Court panel for corruption in a land swap deal between the National Agency of Logistics Affairs (Bulog) and PT Goro Batara Sakti, a company he owned, which caused the state a financial loss of billions of rupiah.
While he was in hiding, police formally declared Tommy a suspect in the murder of a Supreme Court justice, Syaifuddin Kartasasmita, the judge who had headed the Supreme Court panel that sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment.
