If captured, Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaeda terrorist leaders could be executed by firing squad on an American warship or military base, according to the man who suggested having them tried by special military tribunals.
"I think it's probable the proceedings would be held outside the US in a military facility - including a ship - or (the British island of) Diego Garcia," William Barr, US Attorney-General in the first Bush Administration, said.
The US military had no facilities for executions by electric chair, or experience of lethal injection, so "it's likely it would be by firing squad", he suggested in an interview with The Times.
President Bush authorised the creation of military tribunals on November 13. The Pentagon is still developing the rules governing their operation.
