If elected governor Tim Hagan would grant clemency to any inmate nearing his scheduled execution.
The Democratic challenger said if the 5 death row inmates already executed since Gov. Bob Taft took office had asked him for clemency, he would have spared their lives.
"I'm going to commute every person who comes before me, because I'm opposed to capital punishment," Hagan said during a recent joint appearance with Taft. "Unlike you (Taft), I don't believe the people in the state of Ohio are any safer executing 5 people."
Hagan said he's not running to change Ohio's death penalty laws. He also knows most Ohioans favor the death penalty.
"If that means I lose an election, I'm prepared to accept it," he said. Four of the 202 men currently on death row have exhausted all of their legal appeals, meaning they are likely to be executed in the near future.
