In 2001 a total 150,913 criminals were sentenced to imprisonment of five years or more, to life imprisonment, or to death penalty; an increase of 15.07 per cent over 2000.
Supreme People's Court President Xiao Yang said: "During the "strike-hard" drive, people's courts, in line with the principle of being harsh and quick in cracking down on crimes according to law, laid emphasis on striking the crimes with gangster connections and characteristics; serious crimes of violence, such as explosions, homicide, robbery, and kidnapping by force; the frequently occurring crimes that seriously affect the people's sense of safety, such as stealing; and the crimes concerning narcotics and pornographic articles."
Strike Hard campaigns - Party sponsored crimefighting waves in which thousands of suspects are swept up, rushed through trials and many executed - are a cornerstone of public security in the world's most populous country.
