In a survey, 54.66 per cent, NST Online surfers said they believed that stiffer punishment as envisaged by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim was appropriate for rapists, especially men who rape their own daughters.
Some even advocated the death sentence. However, 27.24 per cent disagreed, saying that if the mandatory death sentence could not stop drug dealers, there was no reason it would have any effect on would-be rapists too.
A third line of thinking: Some 18 per cent of surfers want the authorities to delve further into the psyche of the perpetrators, especially the incest rapists to determine "why they do it", before proceeding with the stiffer punishment.
