In Columbia, the state Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of a man who killed two girls in Pickens County. Larry Hall, 42, was sentenced to death in 1992 for murder, rape, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The court said Hall is entitled to a new sentencing trial because his attorneys failed to object when prosecutors asked jurors to compare the worth of Hall's life with that of the 2 girls. While the court has held that prosecutors can compare a defendant's life history with his victim's, "it is more prejudicial for the state to compare the worth of the life of the defendant with that of his victim," Chief Justice Jean Toal wrote in the unanimous opinion.
