In Grand Rapids, in Michigan, Marvin Charles Gabrion II, 48, was sentenced to death for killing a woman who disappeared 2 days before she was to testify against him in a rape case. Gabrion was convicted on March 5 of murder on federal property in the death of 19-year-old Rachel Timmerman, whose body was found in 1997 in a lake in Manistee National Forest. Timmerman and her 11-month-old daughter, Shannon, had disappeared about a month earlier, two days before Timmerman was to testify in a rape case she filed against Gabrion. Shannon has never been found. Gabrion's case marks the first federal death sentence imposed on a defendant in a state that does not have the death penalty since the federal death penalty was reinstated.
