European Union leaders urged Nigeria to show clemency towards a woman sentenced to death by stoning for having sex outside of marriage.
In a statement issued at the end of a two-day summit in Barcelona, the 15 leaders said: "The European Union is deeply concerned by information received on the potential stoning of a woman in Nigeria.
"It urges the Nigerian authorities to fully respect human rights and human dignity with particular reference to women."
The EU opposes any kind of capital punishment.
Safiya Hussaini, a divorced mother of two, was sentenced to death by stoning in 2001 after a sharia court in the northwestern Nigerian city of Sokoto found her guilty of adultery.
