It is only the second time the death penalty has been imposed in a Maryland federal court since the punishment was reinstated in the 1970s.
Lighty, 23, was convicted Oct. 21 of murder and kidnapping for abducting Eric L. Hayes II, 19, on Jan. 23, 2002.
U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte has scheduled Lighty's sentencing for February 3rd. Under federal law, he is required to impose the jury's sentence on Lighty.
