In Karnes City, a jury sentenced a 20-year-old man to death for helping his boyhood friend (Mr. Engleton, 21) plan an ambush that killed three South Texas law officers. It was never proved that Kenneth Vodochodsky was at the scene of the crime, but he was convicted last week of helping set up the Oct. 12, 1999, attack near Pleasanton, south of San Antonio. Those killed were Atascosa County sheriff's deputies Thomas Monse Jr. and Mark Stephenson and Trooper Terry Miller of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Mr. Engleton, 21, fatally shot himself.
