In March, to ensure public security and crack down on hard-core crimes in Tibet, the Lhasa City Intermediate People's Court held a public rally to pronounce judgment on 17 criminal offenders. Three involved in robbery and murder were given the death sentence. After the rally, they were escorted to the execution ground and put to death. The remaining 14, who were convicted of embezzlement or robbery, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 5 to 15 years, or were given the death sentence with a 2-year reprieve.
