In occasion of the of the Tuscan Florence festival, held to celebrate the decision taken in 1786 by the Grand-Duke of Tuscany, to make it the first state in the world to have abolished the death penalty and the use of torture, there was held a conference on the matter. The initiative was adhered to by the European Parliament, the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. The head of the Green Party at the Tuscan regional Council, Fabio Roggiolani, asked in a motion that the region "actively concerns itself with the death penalty case against Abdullah Ocalan, starting a momentous initiative such as that in favour of Rocco Barnabei".
