In Peoria, a jury of 7 men and 5 women deliberated almost 9 hours before sentencing Dale W. Lash, 40, to death.
Associate Circuit Judge George Ray set an execution date of Feb. 10; however, that date is automatically stayed and the sentence appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court. In addition, there is a moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois.
The jurors deliberated last week that Lash is guilty of the rape and murder of Hayes, 25, on Aug. 1, 1999.
